Children’s Disclosures of Physical Abuse in a Population-Based Sample
2020
Few studies have explored the disclosure of child physical abuse although child sexual abuse disclosure has been widely studied and debated for years. The present study explores the characteristics of child physical abuse disclosures and compares them to previously published findings on child sexual abuse disclosure from the same data. The data consist of a representative sample of 11,364 sixth and ninth graders. Participants responded to a wide variety of questions concerning experiences of violence, including child physical abuse and child sexual abuse, in the Finnish Child Victim Survey conducted in 2013. Within this sample, the prevalence of child physical abuse was 4.1%. Children repo…
Metamorphoses of Shamed Bodies : Sexual Violence in Euripides’s Helen
2021
In this paper I explore the connections between shame and embodiment in Euripides’s play Helen. The paper focuses on the play’s underlying theme of sexual violence and rape, and on the descriptions of metamorphoses that the mythological female victims often undergo in the face of rape. In my analysis on shame and embodiment I apply two insights from Giorgio Agamben’s analysis of the phenomenon of victim shame in The Remnants of Auschwitz. These are, first, the definition according to which shame is “to be consigned to what cannot be assumed”—that is, to be consigned to one’s self, being and physical body—and second, the claim that in shame one is affected by one’s own (bodily) passivity. Bu…

Non-abusing mothers’ agency after disclosure of the child’s extra-familial sexual abuse
2020
This qualitative study analysed the agency of eight non-abusing mothers in the Turkish Cypriot Community after disclosure that their child had been sexually abused by someone outside the family. The aim was to discover how, after disclosure, such mothers act to protect their children in the contexts of their family and community. The data were gathered via semi-structured in-depth interviews and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). In the nuclear family context, maternal agency emerged in the form of motherhood skills, including emotionally supporting the abused child, double-checking the child’s safety or limiting the child’s mobility, and controlling the actions…
Grooming internetissä ja lapsen seksuaalinen hyväksikäyttö
2011
Internet on tarjonnut lapsille ja nuorille kaivatun tilan ja uudenlaisia mahdollisuuksia sosiaaliseen verkostoitumiseen ilman huoltajien ja vanhempien valvontaa. Vanhempien ymmärryksen tai kiinnostuksen puute internetin luomia mahdollisuuksia kohtaan on kuitenkin jättänyt monen lapsen alttiiksi ja helposti lähestyttäviksi myös niiden aikuisten taholta, jotka tuntevat seksuaalista mielenkiintoa lapsia kohtaan. Tätä aikuisen lapseen kohdistamaa lähestymistapaa kutsutaan nimellä grooming. Groomingin tekniikka ei ole iso mysteeri. Lapsen seksuaaliseen hyväksikäyttöön pyrkivä aikuinen lähestyy lasta usein samankaltaisin tavoin, kuin aikuiset lähestyvät muita aikuisia. Tyypillisesti grooming-pros…

Violence in close relationships with children raises intriguing questions for our society. The sense making may go on in a fragile balance between possible false accusations and possible neglect of needed concerns. This study explores contexts where such concerns are at stake. From the vantage point of outlining main contributors towards a dialogical understanding of human meaning making, the study explores how this evolves when issues of child sexual abuse, violence, and maltreatment are at stake. The study examines three naturalistic settings: (1) A Norwegian university hospital’s specialty mental health service for children and adolescents, including all cases (N = 20) referred in two ye…
